Obeying the Lord

I started attending a new church, and they have a daily bible reading guide. Each day has a different scripture to read as we are trying to read through the whole Bible.

As I was doing my bible reading for this morning, it has me in 1 Samuel. As I was reading the scripture, I was able to read something that I never had before.

In 1 Samuel Chapters 11-15, it shows two incidents that Saul, who was made king at the time, disobeyed what the Lord had told him to do. But the situation in chapter 15 is the one that got me.

“Thus, saith the Lord of host, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came from Egypt. Now go and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass” I Samuel 15:2 &3 (KJV)

So, the Lord told Samuel to tell Saul to go kill everything in Amalek. He wanted EVERYTHING destroyed. All the men, women, children, and animals he wanted them gone.

So, Saul went and he did opposite of what the Lord wanted him to do.

“But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: butt everything that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly” 1 Samuel 15: 9 (KJV)

Saul did what he wanted to do. He knew God told him to leave nothing alive, but he kept the King (Agag) alive and all the best of the animals.

Saul thought he did good, but Samuel quickly reminded him that he had went against what God had told him to do.

In Sauls eyes, he felt he had obeyed the voice of the Lord, and the people brought back the animals.

Now isn’t like someone to try to justify what was done. Now God said everything to be destroy and he charged to Saul to do. But he uses the excuse of the people, but he knew what God specifically said to him.

When God tells us things to do, and we do what someone else says, it is us not the other person God is going to punish.

Because Saul was disobedient to God, he took the kingship away from him.

As Christians, we need to always obey the voice of the Lord. We should never do things that God has told us to do our own way.

“And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I have command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth.” Deuteronomy 28:1 (KJV)

When we listen to the voice of the Lord, and we are obedient to his voice, we have nothing to worry about. God will bless us, because we are obedient to him

But, when we are disobedient to what God has told us to do, there will be consequences.

We can mess up our own blessings when we are not willing to do what God tells us to do.

Saul messed himself up, because he wanted to do things his way and not do what God told him to do. If he would have just destroyed everything in Amalek like he was told, everything would have been fine.

But because he did things his way, God took away what he had given him.

There have been plenty of times in my life where I did not listen to the Lord, and he had to take me down a peg or two. He had to get on me for my disobedience, and show me where I messed up.

No matter what we may think, it is always important for us to listen to the voice of the Lord.

Weather we understand it or not, we should do what God tells us, when he tells us and how he tells us to do it.

Be blessed.
